Sandro Chia

Sandro Chia was born in 1946 in Florence, where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1970 he settled in Rome and soon held his first exhibitions. In 1980 he worked in Germany for one year and began showing successfully in European countries. After staying for about twenty years in New York and Rome, he eventually settled in Montalcino, near Siena.\nAs the other members of the “Transavanguardia” art movement, after being in connection with the main Neo-avantgardes, Chia became estranged from conceptualism and turned to figurative painting, particularly towards typical elements of the historical Expressionism, with a strong and dynamic style, featuring the use of remarkably vivid and dense impasto. His large-sized works are often populated with heroic male figures, also represented in his bronze sculptures and frequently painted in bright colours. Some of his paintings and sculptures are included in important public collections displayed in Rome.
