Among the side events of the 2nd FánHuā Chinese Film Festival in Florence, held at Cinema La Compagnia from 20 to 23 October 2022, the FánHuā Association and Zhong Art International scheduled at the Centro Pecci the screening of two films and presented the video-installation named '8' by Chinese artist Liang Shaoji.
Liang Shaoji, a Chinese conceptual artist born in Shanghai in 1945, trained at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou and studied at the Varbanov Institute of Tapestry. He expresses himself through installations, sculptures, films and textiles that he exhibits internationally and is best known for the extensive use of the silkwormcharacterising his works. Inspired by Chinese tradition and philosophy, Liang has presented numerous works centred on the different stages of sericulture, also exhibiting at the 1999 Venice Biennale.
The title "8" comes from the shape in which the silkworm wraps the fibre of its cocoon, also comparable to the symbol of infinity.
Two titles were chosen from the "FánHuā Chinese Film Festival" programme by its curator Paolo Bertolin, who, before the screening in the original language with Italian subtitles, introduced each film in specially recorded videos:
Legend of Deification by Cheng Teng and Li Wei (2020), a huge success in China, screened on Saturday 15 October at 6 pm. The auditorium was full for this animation film about the mythical hero Jiang Ziya, which attracted a great number of Italian and Chinese children and youngsters.
The Story of Qiu Ju, by Zhang Yimou (1992), scheduled for Saturday 29 October at 6.30 pm, is a great favourite classic of Chinese cinematography, winner of the most prestigious international awards, including the Golden Lion at the 49th Venice Film Festival.
