
Fang Lijun è nato a Handan nel 1963. Ha studiato all’ Accademia di Belle Arti di Pechino, città dove tuttora vive e lavora. Si è fatto conoscere per il suo contributo al movimento cinico realista cinese, costituito da un gruppo di artisti che esprimevano critiche nei confronti degli stereotipi dell’Arte di regime e del Partito Comunista Cinese. Il lavoro di Fang Lijun affronta la questione dei diritti umani, della moralità e dell'oppressione politica attraverso raffigurazioni oniriche colorate, visioni surreali ed elementi ironici; nelle sue opere si staglia spesso l’immagine di una testa rasata a rappresentare gli apatici seguaci del Partito. Ha esposto, tra gli altri, al China Art Museum e al Today Art Museum di Pechino, negli Staatliche Museen di Berlino, al Museum of Fine Arts di Berna, alla Biennale di Venezia nel 1993 e nel 1999. Molti suoi lavori fanno parte di collezioni pubbliche e private.
